Tonight, Eefje is making dinner. For everyone who doesn’t feeling like doing so themselves and for all the people who don’t have time to spend in their kitchens. And Eefje’s dinner will be a healthy one. Doesn’t that sound good?
Thee months ago, Eveline – her friends call her Eefje – and Ferry opened their restaurant Eefje. Eveline wanted to use her marketing studies in a business of her own and was already spending a lot of time in her kitchen cooking healthy meals during her studies. Ferry noticed that he was eating a lot of unhealthy fast food because of his very busy professional and family life. When the two put all of this together, they decided to start a new concept!
And that concept is super simple: at Eefje’s you can get a fast and healthy meal for under € 10,- every night of the week (except Saturdays). You can have your dinner delivered at home, you can collect your meals at Eefje’s or you can sit down at the restaurant for your quick meal. Healthy fast food usually means meal-sized salads, but Eveline and Ferry wanted more. They did not banish salads from their restaurant – they always have one on their menu – but the other options are dishes that are a bit more creative than what you would cook at home or that simply cost more time than you perhaps have yourself.
Though we like the idea of having a good meal delivered at home, we of course sat down at the restaurant. The interior is clean and basic, but also very cosy, trendy and industrial. Frames are hanging on the walls, plants decorate the high tables and magazines are lying in an old school scale for those who are waiting for their takeaways. During the summer months, you can sit down at the small terrace outside and those who really want to relax, get one of the beach chairs and sit down in the grass field in front of the restaurant.
We take a close look at the menu, but we don’t need much time for that. Because the menu is as simple as the concept of Eefje. In the evening you can make your choice from only four meals. They have a standard format as well: one vegetarian meal, a typical Dutch option – such as mash pots and braised meat – a foreigh dish and a meal-sized salad. This way Eefje serves something for everyone, but limits the choice stress and the waiting time. And if you think this means that you have tasted the whole menu after four vitis, don’t worry! Eefje has a different menu each week.
Each Thursday, Eveline and her right hand Veerle have a brainstorm session to create next week’s menu. They don’t need any cook book for this, as they always use their own creativity and the inspiration of seasonal products. This doesn’t mean that you will never see a dish on the menu twice. For example, Dutch stews are very popular – as most people don’t have the hours to cook such meal at home – and previously used ingredients can often been seen on the menu in another dish.
After having some bread from Jordy’s Bakery, we have a vegetarian moussaka and lamb meatballs in harrisa sauce with a Greek salad on the side. For dessert we are happy to taste Eefje’s home-made brownie with raspberry. Perhaps not so healthy, but enjoying your favourite food is healthy as well, Eefje says. And we are enjoying our meals for sure! The dishes are simple, but most of all delicious and well prepared.
It’s not only possible to take away your meals at Eefje’s, you can also have them delivered at home with Thuisbezorgd, Deliveroo, Foodora ánd UberEats. After the first taste of Eefje’s food we already know that we will have some meals delivered at home for sure. And we are not alone, as Eefje is hugely popular. The numbers of orders and customers grows each week. Yes, Rotterdam is definitely excited about Eefje’s fast and healthy meals!
