Design from Rotterdam and special products with an interesting story; many beautiful things come together at Hutspot. Time to visit this cool initiative!
In the summer of 2012, three creative and ambitious friends – Nick van Aalst, Reinier Bernaert and Pieter Jongens – opened the first Hutspot store in Amsterdam. The store proved to be a great success and although Hutspot was intended as a pop-up store, the concept has now five permanent branches in four different Dutch cities. In November 2016, it opened its door in Rotterdam at the Karel Doormanstraat and we can sincerely say that the beautiful store is an asset to our Maasstad. It’s a place where you can shop if you love design, fashion and lifestyle products.
Hutspot sells a variety of different products, you could actually set up your entire life by just shopping here. From beautiful books to organic candy and from refurbished bikes to sportswear, you name it, they sell it! But it’s all a little different from the usual stuff, because the assortment is being carefully assembled. At Hutspot you will find mostly Dutch brands, but also many local brands. They find it important that the products are unique and the local aspect makes that the range per branch or city differs. Sustainability is something that is very important here too.
At the establishment in Rotterdam, you will find a lot of art from Rotterdam designers, such as the beautiful animal posters of Ferdy Remijn, illustrations of Marianne Lock and handmade books by Ervin Poot. This latter artist is only in his first year of his studies at the Willem de Kooning Academy and he spends half a day preparing one book. They are very unique and there are only a few copies of this special book available.
When you are planning to purchase such a beautiful piece of art, it’s also nice to buy a beautiful bag with it, so you can safely take your new acquisition home. Fortunately, Hutspot also offers a wide range of bags. For example, they sell bags of the brand UNU Rotterdam, handmade by ladies from Rotterdam, who have the opportunity to develop their talents this way. The brand is inspired by the many cultures from this city and it can be seen from the beautiful patterns and colorful prints. In addition, Hutspot also sells the brand PinqPonq, a German bag brand made of 100% recycled pet bottles. Very sustainable! Another nice brand that can’t be missed is the Canadian Matt & Nat, that makes bags and accessories that look like and feel like leather, yet they are totally vegan.
This article starts to become a summary of brands and products, and that is not the intention, but there are still some we need to tell you about. For example, Hektik, from Katendrecht. A brand that makes children’s clothing of ecological cotton and does this regularly in collaboration with a social workplace. Allon Dery’s tables are amazing and the vintage race bikes that, after being completely refurbished, meet a second life are a must for every lover. Also nice; the side table of Reinier de Jong, which has broomsticks as legs!
In addition to all the cool brands, Hutspot also has its own brand, for which they have recently collaborated with the creative designer duo AnoukxVera. The result of this collaboration is a brand new sportswear line, which is exclusively available at all Hutspot stores. And, apart from all those musthaves, they also have enough in the food area at Hutspot, such as mayonnaise with gin(!) and the biological teas of Paper & Tea.
Enough about all those wonderful things! What does the shop actually look like? Hutspot is located in a spacious and light building. The layout is spacious and the interior is designed by the three owners themselves. There are no narrow corridors, but space enough to stroll between all the beautiful stuff. The blocks – on which many of the products are presented – are usually low, which means you have a good overview of the entire store. Between the blocks you’ll find clothing racks or a jewelry-filled display cases, which makes for a stylish whole. Also very nice; at the back of the shop there’s a whole row of spacious fitting rooms, and even the coat racks in there are for sale.
Hutspot is, as it describes itself: “A curator for an urbanized lifestyle”. It’s a place where beautiful things come together. Whether you’re planning to get an amazing designer piece or just looking for something nice, Hutspot has something for everyone. Prices already start at €0,50 and continue to amounts that are a little bigger. Even when you’re not looking for anything, Hutspot is a fun and inspiring place to check out!
