Enjoying the Latin American cuisine in the heart of Rotterdam. Restaurant and cocktail bar Supermercado, located on the Schiedamse Vest, offers you that opportunity.
Your culinary journey can be as diverse as you want. You can start with a delicious Brazilian lemonade, then enjoy Mexican, Peruvian or Argentinean dishes and close your culinary adventure with exciting Cuban cocktails. All that without expensive tickets and visa applications.
I can sit for hours at Supermercado. Because of the relaxed atmosphere you don’t have the feeling of being unwanted by the staff after a while. The interior is colorful and cheerful. The wooden tables with colored chairs that are different from each other make for a playful and homely character. Matching the whole Latin American picture, you can find cactuses everywhere.
Upon entering on a quiet Monday afternoon, we have plenty of space to choose a nice table. Bartender Benjaro, who also serves as a waiter when it’s not that busy, explains a few things on the menu to us. Basically everything on the menu sounds good so we order a mix of dishes. “There are many people that come here who just want to eat a little bite but not an entire meal. At Supermercado we don’t really serve tapas and it also isn’t shared dining, but many dishes do cater to that purpose”, Benjaro explains. And so, moments later, our table is filled with various dishes in various colors and scents.
Ceviche of yellowfin tuna and watermelon, spare ribs with pomegranate and habanero jam, various tacos including pulled pork, prawns and chicken, baked potato with Peruvian cheese sauce and sweet potato fries decorate our table. Mouth watering good. Luckily it tastes just as delicious as it looks.
As if we are not yet full enough of all the goodies, we get a huge colorful colossus as dessert: the Freak Shake. “The ingredients are different each time, it depends on what ingredients are bought”, says Benjaro. The version we get contains strawberry puree, condensed milk and white chocolate syrup, topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream, chocolate cake, bastogne cookies and smarties. Apparently there are people that finish this on their own, but we’re definitely going to share this one.
Next to being a restaurant Supermercado is also a cocktail bar. Benjaro proves this to me when I make my way to the bar. Here, he makes the beautiful pink Walter Melon cocktail for me, with gin, watermelon, lime juice, coriander and rose petals. I’m enjoying this very much!
Long after we finish eating, we’re leaving the place. It’s just a nice place to hang around. With a full belly and a satisfied feeling we leave Supermercado. Definitely until next time!
