Wine tasting at a unique location? De Wijnwijven got you covered. Founders Barbara, Kim and Lisa gladly share their knowledge and passion for wine with others. On Friday, September 8th we joined them at a Secret Rooftop Tasting. In the morning we received a clue for the venue. A red carpet was waiting for us to bring us to STROOM Rotterdam. The rooftop terrace was ready to host us, but because of the rain we had to stay in. While enjoying a good glass of wine and bites, we became acquainted with De Wijnwijven.
How and when did you get started? “About eight years ago we organized a wine tasting for friends. We ordered a test package and read about all the wine. The responds to the wine tasting were so enthusiastic that we decided to organize this more often. One thing led to another and one day we suddenly came up with a name. Since then we are known as De Wijnwijven. We get many positive comments about our name. It draws attention and sticks. Wine tasting doesn’t have to be all that serious either.”
How did the passion for wine grow upon you? “We had fun nights drinking wine with friends and family. Then, we started going to wine tastings. Our interest in good wine kept on growing because of these events. After the founding of De Wijnwijven we were doing this kind of thing more often; wine tastings, fairs, master classes, and also joining several wine trainings.” How would you describe the concept? “We organize events and wine tastings, with a twist. We do this for both companies and private groups. We can take care of a business event, an office opening, a birthday, or bachelorette party. In addition, we organize a wine tasting or wine workshop each month, all with an original and surprising theme. Such as Guilty Pleasures – with special wine and bites combinations -, and Zware Jongens (Heavy Boys): heavy wines. Our Secret Tastings are quite popular. We always look for a special venue and keep it a secret until the day of the event. In addition, we also engage in PR & Communication, brand activation and productions. We do this primarily for companies in the wine, gastronomy and festival industry. Sometimes we organize an event on behalf of a brand, we write on demand or we are hired to take care of the PR or production of a festival. Very diverse!”
What is the power of your events? “We have an original approach. Our themes are surprising and we try to bring it to you in an understandable way. Nobody wants just facts. Participants are learning more about wine in a fun way. At STROOM Rotterdam we organize a series of four wine tastings; Dikke Vette Huiswijnen (Thick Fat Autumn Wines), Rare Druif (Rare Grape), Oud vs Nieuw (Old vs New) and Guilty Pleasures. We are also working on the next Secret Tasting, but we are still looking for a special venue.”
What was the most fun event so far? “The Secret Tastings are very nice to organize. The search for a special venue, contact with the participants, the secret aspect and the great comments on the evening itself. We always try something special, like a red carpet and bubbles. And of course we take care of delicious wines and a good explanation.” What is your perfect time for a good glass of your favorite wine? “In this time of the year and with this typical autumn weather, we all tend to go for a somewhat fuller, red wine. Favorites of us are: Rioja Reserva by la Rioja Alta, Cala 2 (Tempranillo) by Tinedo or a full-bodied Carmenère. When? On a fun night with friends, while having a delicious dinner, or curled up on the couch under a blanket. A good moment is actually very easy to create.”
What are your plans for the future? “Our dream is to open a (pop-up) wine bar someday. Until that time, we will continue to organize many fun events and we still want to grow in the business market. We are already busy with the preparations for the RYPP Wine Festival in 2018. Last May, the first edition of this multi-day wine festival took place on the roof of the Hofbogen. We were responsible for the Wijnwijven Proefpaviljoen (wine tasting pavilion) and Barbara also played a role in the organization and overall production. Cool things!”
